Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is known as a deterioration or breakdown of the macula, the small area in the retina at the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details clearly. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over 65 years of age. There are several forms of macular degeneration, but the fastest growing form is age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Two types of AMD
Dry (atrophic): most common form of AMD caused by aging and thinning of the tissues of the macula
Wet (Exudative): The “wet” form of AMD results when abnormal blood vessels form underneath the retina at the back of the eye
Diagnosing AMD
Your ophthalmologist can perform a simple eye exam and take special photographs of the eye called fluorescein angiography to find abnormal blood vessels under the retina.

Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina is pulled away from its normal position causing blurred vision. This is a very serious problem, almost always resulting in blindness if not treated and can be caused by these factors:
· Nearsightedness
· Previous Cataract surgery
· Glaucoma
· Severe injury
· Previous retinal detachment in other eye
· Family history of retinal detachment
· Weak area in your retina which can be detected by your Ophthalmologist
